Major scale

The major scale is a diatonic scale derived from the Ionian mode. Since the laws or harmony were first established, the major scale has come to be the basic building-block of contemporary music.
In 1547, Heinrich Glarean, a Swiss music theorist, proposed that there were twelve diatonic modes rather than the traditional eight used in mediaeval church music of the time. These "folk" modes added by Glarean became the basis of the major/minor division of classical European music; the Ionian mode being the major scale.
